Fabulous Hamptons movie party update!

I got to go to the tres exclusive Southampton premiere of IN HER SHOES on Sunday night, along with my agent, my editor, the publisher of Atria books, my sister and my Mom (together, we lowered the fabulous quotient by at least ten percent, and I personally increased the average weight of female attendees by at least that much).

The screening was at seven. We showed up a dorky thirty minutes early, posed for pictures (you can see them here), then gawped at the people ambling into the theater, trying to figure out who they were, what they did, and how best to replicate their look of effortless sun-streaked caftan-jeans-and-flip-flops beach-chic (or maybe that was just me).

There was a Sykes sister in attendance, along with actress/author Lorraine Bracco and Olympic figure skater Sarah Hughes who has actually read my books!

But I think my favorite thing was the guys in polo shirts. Not Polo, as in Ralph Lauren, but polo as in, I played a few chukkers this afternoon. You don't see a lot of that in Philadelphia.

The movie was just as amazing as I remember, but it was weird sitting there watching it with my sister on one side of me and my mother on the other. I was watching the movie, and watching their reactions, and then watching the audience's reactions to see if they were all as moved as I was. So far, so good. Lots of people were laughing, lots of people (men included) were crying, and a bunch of them couldn't wait to say how much they loved the picture and that they'd be recommending it to their hundred best friends. I was so happy to be there.

The next morning I was interviewed by Plum TV, a cable channel that only broadcasts in the country's most exclusive enclaves -- the Hamptons, Nantucket, Palm Beach, etc.

It was one of the most fun interviews I've ever done (although it was very hard to keep from shouting, a la Spinal Tap, "Hello, rich people!") Alli Joseph is a hoot, and very easy to talk to, whether it was about the writing life or the guy my sister once dated who couldn't leave the state because he was on parole.

When it was over, my Mom asked if they could send her a tape. We told her that the Plum people probably aren't allowed to mail things to her unfabulous zip code.

So that's my story, and now I'm off to the continuing saga of GOODNIGHT NOBODY: the copy edits.

Thanks to everyone who came to the second half of the tiny tour readings. I had a great time meeting you all, even if, after my visit to Wellesley, I am suffering from serious library envy.
