"Mook!" she said, which is Lucy-speak for 'milk.' "Mook!" "Okay, sweetie, just hang on and we'll go get more milk." Silence from the stroller, then she started pumping the sippy cup in the air. "Stah-bucks!" she said. "Stah-bucks!" This is just wrong. But, in our defense, if you go to the Starbucks at Broad and Pine, they will not only A., sell you a kid's sized milk for the very reasonable price of a dollar; but B., offer to wash your sippy cup and pour the milk in there. It's just weird that Lucy can now say it. I was so hoping to keep her away from brand names until she turned two. Thanks so much to all of the bassoon players, or friends/girlfriends/ex-wives of bassoon players out there who answered my call for information. I'm going to spend the next week or two talking opera, and bassoon. Then I might have more questions in re: the new book. So stay tuned, and thanks for helping. | # Thursday, January 06, 2005 posted by Jen at 1/06/2005 01:45:00 PM Thanks for your help, everyone. I now have opera singers coming out of my ears. Now I need a middle-aged male bassoon player. Any takers? | # Wednesday, January 05, 2005 posted by Jen at 1/05/2005 08:28:00 PM Well, you know this was coming: the New York Times writes about desperate freelancers fighting over the power outlets at their local coffee shops. I've been pretty lucky in that regard -- the coffee shop where I work has plugs a-plenty, and I've almost always been able to score one when I needed it. If not, my laptop can go for about four hours on its battery, and four hours is pretty much as long as I can write for one stretch, so it's all good. (I can't remember if I told this story before, but a while back, someone was interviewing me about how I get my writing done, and I said, "Well, in the afternoons I work in a coffee shop." She stared at me and said, "I thought your books were doing well!") Meanwhile, here's the always provocative Laura Kipnis talking about why feminists can't make peace with fat. And now, a request for help: is anyone out there an opera singer? Or does anyone out there know an opera singer whose brain I could pick for a little while? One of the characters in my new book is an opera singer who marries a bassoon player, and I want to make sure that I'm getting the details right. That list I posted this morning isn't actually the Social Security list, but the list that Babycenter compiles from its members (who evidently have many unconventional ways to spell Jaden). Thanks to Sawyer's mom for the heads-up. Meanwhile, did anyone in the Philadelphia area watch KYW's noon news today, and happen to see an adorable curly-headed toddler in overalls and a purple down vest and red shoes enjoying the morning sunshine during the weather segment? Anyone? And dammit, when are they going to invent TiVo that I can communicate with via cell phone? Or, better yet, telepathy? | # posted by Jen at 1/03/2005 09:22:00 AM Running out the door with the girl, but meanwhile, one of my seasonal treats is now available: the Social Security Administration's list of the top 100 baby names. Emma's still number one for little girls, with Ava clocking in at number twenty-five. And Kennedy, Reagan, Brooklyn, Audrey, Trinity and Jaydn -- yes, spelled just like that -- all rank higher than Lucy, which has yet to crack the top 100 (which is good news, as far as this mom named Jennifer is concerned). Jacob still tops the boys' list. More soon... | # |
