Okay, I'm back in Los Angeles, and I have many celebrity sightings to report!
But first, as they say back home on Channel 6, the big story....
1. My brother got married! It was a beautiful day, and a beautiful service, on the balcony on the sixth floor of the Chateau Marmont, with the most gorgeous flowers I've ever seen -- huge stands of white orchids and dogwood blossoms and mounds of multicolored roses, and things I don't even know the names of that smelled delicious. And delicious wedding cake, and just a wonderful, joyous day. Which was proceeded by....
2. The rehearsal dinner at Asia de Cuba, which is in the Mondrian Hotel, which is a very celebrity-ish place, and home of the Sky Bar, which sort of inspired the Star Bar in GOOD IN BED. More delicious food, and the first celeb of the night --- David Schwimmer, trying to enjoy an intimate dinner with a young brunette female companion (I say "trying" because I think that for all of the casual trips my sibs and I took past his table on our way to the bathroom, the lobby, the bathroom again, I don't know how enjoyable he found any of it). After dinner, Adam and I went back to our room and caught the tail end of The Amazing Race, while my sister Molly and my brother Joe proceeded to the SkyBar, then the Bar Marmont, where they hung out all night long with....
3. Anne Meara and Jerry Stiller, who must live at the Chateau Marmont because that's where my mother saw them when she visited last month.
Now, for most of us, it would be enough for us just to see a famous face, or maybe give a polite, restrained 'hello.' Not so for my sister Molly, who inveighed upon Mr. Stiller to place cell phone calls to all of her East Coast friends. "Hello!" he said. "This is George Costanza's father from Seinfeld. It's very late. We've enjoyed many drinks, and we're going back for more."
Or so says Molly. She also says that Anne showed her pictures of Ben Stiller's new baby. I can't tell you whether this is true or not, but I can say that.....
4. Ethan Hawke showed up at Jake and April's wedding -- very briefly -- and fled after deciding that he was underdressed in jeans and a tee shirt. I have this on good authority from both bride and groom. And, after the wedding, Adam and I returned to the Mondrian and saw....
5. Director Kevin Smith (in calf-length shorts and a Mooby baseball cap) and his wife Jennifer checking in, alongside three very giggly, very tiny, very busty, very tan, very blonde young women. Who, the electrician at the side of the pool informed us, were there for....
6. A party sponsored by Playboy, to be held poolside, even as I'm typing this right now. While we were waiting for the valet guys to bring us our car (the only non-Range Rover, non-BMW, non-Mercedes and non-Rolls Royce or Bentley in the place), we saw a veritable bevy of anatomically improbable young women, many of them on the arms of short, balding men. Adam was brandishing his copy of Robert Caro's latest, Master of the Senate -- because, he says, nothing says "come flirt with the married guy" like an 1100-page third-volume of a biography of Lyndon Johnson (which, on a somewhat related note, was reviewed in the Times on Wednesday beneath a headline that began "A Surging Johnson." Heh).
And did I mention that by the time we finally got our car the Mondrian lobby was full up with women wearing old-fashioned bunny costumes, complete with ears and cotton-fluff tails?
This is just the silliest town in the world. We're going back to Philadelphia tomorrow. I'm thinking that's probably a good thing.
