A reader writes: how come no mention of the election on your weblog?

I wrote back and went through my whole song and dance about how there are plenty of political blogs, and how nobody really wants to hear any entertainer -- novelist, actor, singer, whatever -- talk about their politics. I talked about how my husband works -- er, worked -- for a Democrat's senate campaign, separation of church and state, don't want my blog to turn into an advertorial for his candidate and blah blah blah.

But the truth is, I'm just so damn depressed that I don't even want to talk about the election.

Beyond Bush's victory; beyond the notion that we're going to be stuck with decades of his Supreme Court appointees, I think I'm most saddened by the voters' response to the gay marriage question. Two people want to love each other, and want access to the benefits and privileges that legal marriage brings. Who's got a problem with love? (Although I think the Republicans managed to spin the issue to the extent that the religious righte went to the polls to express its opinions not about love but about anal sex).

Ack. Depressing.

Meanwhile, a disappointed reader writes: how dare you trash Ocean City, New Jersey in LITTLE EARTHQUAKES? It's a lovely place, with clean, straight sidewalks, vibrant industry and lots of churches!

Okay, I'm making up the part about clean, straight sidewalks, but she really did say "and it has a lot of churches." I'm not sure if that's supposed to be code for "good community," but then, I'm a liberal Jew. Help?
